For Greg
The strangest season of the Fore Skin Golf League comes to an end this week. Some say: “Finally yes!” Some say: “Finally {sigh}!” Some say: “The dinner after is free, right?”
We have lost a dear friend forever, we have had to re-institute our bye week protocol when faced with not enough teams, we have had to deploy a three man team when faced with the lowest amount of teams ever, and we have had the highest low scores in the history of the league. Strange indeed.
Through it all, Team 3 has led wire to wire. This week, Team 5 has the daunting task of trying to win a match with the most points ever. It should be noted that perennial powerhouse Team 4 is still mathematically in it as well, despite catastrophic setbacks.
Let me, your “Captain”, take this time to thank all for helping, well, ALL of us get through this season. It has made the tough times easier and more memorable. Thanks to all for donating your prize money to Greg’s children.
Now, did I miss anything? Ah yes - dinner is on the league after golf at Joe’s Prime Time Pub.
Oh, one more thing. The tale of the tape.
Team 3 needs to get 3 points to clinch the Fore Skin Cup.
Team 5 needs to get 21.5 points to clinch the Fore Skin Cup.
Team 4 needs to (deep breath) get all 24 points available, and Team 4 has to have nobody show up and Team 3 goes scoreless. See, Team 4 is still in it!
Team 2 needs to let Team 4 get all the points.
Team 1 is playing a scramble but maybe they can join Teams 2 and 4 for the fun of it.

"Golf is not, and has never been a fair game." ~Jack Nicklaus
Unfortunate and sad news from all things Fore Skins. With a heavy heart, your Captain regrets to inform you that he has lost his Oops. And we have lost a friend, a family member, a valued golf partner, a University of Michigan graduate, a fellow long time football season ticket holder for 27 years (and all around UM sports nut), and a six time Fore Skin Champion.
Greg Galdes died on Sunday, July 26, 2009. He leaves behind wife Cathy, daughters Yvonne (14) and Bethany (11), mother Virginia and father Charles. He is also survived by siblings Gary, Cheryl (Carlton Engstrom), Cynthia (Stefan Majlinger), Caroline (Chris Theodorovich) and Catherine (Chris Melody).

Advancing Tied
Team 3 continues to have control over the league, but they are using that control each week it seems. Will they have any cards left to play for the last month of the season? Team 2 has crept closer and closer, setting up a possible two-count-em-two week showdown that promises to SHAKE UP FORE SKINS AS WE KNOW IT!!! {know it know it echo echo} Can team 3 stave them off? And while they are doing that, everyone’s favorite team to watch (admit it, come on, you all watch), Team 4, is still hanging around. And you know what happens when they hang around. You think you do, but do you really? Really?!
Anyway, let’s address the {clever} title of this entry. The league is creeping closer together, even though we all tie each week it seems. Especially last week when each match split team totals for the first time in Fore Skin History (prolly, I guess). Will the trend continue this week? Or will someone step up? That’s this week, in beautiful South Rockwood, be there, at Wesburn.
Oh - and also be there, after golf, in beautiful Gibraltar, at Joe’s Prime Time Pub.

North Mosquito Coast
The skeeters were out. According to long-time Fore Skin Mike, it was the worst it has ever been. According to CCJ, we were “just food”. According to the scores, the state birds were bothersome.
Team 3 had a bad night, but with so much cushion it is hard to see that they lost ground. Team 4 is still lurking, as usual. Team 2 underachieved in the skeeter storm as well.
We continue round robin this week. I have no idea if the mosquitoes will be bad again or not. Visit here to see, maybe.

Prime Time
The second half has begun, we have entered Fore Skin Prime Time. And it is time to make a move long overdue - post golf, we are going back to Joe’s Prime Time for the afterglow. Please all, join us, in our valiant return to the home of the Meat Loaf Sandwich.
I imagine I should recap a bit. Team 3 stood their ground during the scramble and still has a commanding lead. But after this week, they should finally have established back nine averages for 2009. Then maybe we will see some backpedaling. Meanwhile, the other teams can only hope and take some shots. Team 1 has theirs this week while Team 2 finishes off their 4-straight-week-scramble tour. Teams 4 and 5 battle again for the right to join the chase. That’s this week, at Wesburn.

Halftime Show
The first half is over and Team 3 showed their dominance. For this they win...nothing. Nothing, that is, but a target on all three of their backs for the second half. Let us measure the contenders:
Team 2 has a certain stare that I have not seen from them before (or maybe they need a good night sleep).
Team 5 is showing their A-game (or maybe they just have played their fav whipping-boy Team 1 too much).
Team 4, well, we all know the storied history of that team, no need to question if they can come back (or maybe they should question it themselves to help focus).
Team 1 has the support of the South Rockwood crowd to get Mike his first cup ever (or maybe I just made that crowd thing up).
Which team will step up? Multiple? It all starts this week with another two-man scramble kickoff. At Wesburn. Be there.
Updated 6/30/09: It took The Captain a while, but he was able to add a half point to his score and take away said half point from Team 3. Simply a manual mistake on hole #10. The scorecard scan, the standings to the right, the brand-new Press Release (the old one is gone forever) and standings going forward all reflect this change. This is the one mistake a year that is made (not counting that other one).

Positioning Strategy
It is time for another evening of position night golf, fore skin style. This means we have to apply stupid outdated rules and 2nd place Team 2 plays a two-man scramble all by their lonesome. This means that Team 3 has to try and not cower down to Hall of Fame Team 4 this week to protect their big lead. Meanwhile, with the league bunched up, Team 1 and Team 5 face off - get ready for another record breaking effort from Greg 2.0 against his favorite foe, NCMike. All of this during projected 90 degree weather.
That’s this week. At Wesburn. Be there.

Divided We Gain
The league has split into two divisions. Team 3 and everyone else. Team 3 has that commanding lead while everyone else has bunched up behind them. Closer, mind you, but still hitting each other for the right to fight. Team 3 has shown some weakness, so - who will emerge for the second division to challenge before next week’s Position Night marks league halftime? Team 2 is in good position to play a BYE week with tons of strokes.
Speaking of BYE weeks, Team 5 decided to not play the customary two-man BYE week scramble last week for some reason. For the record, their score was concocted from using each player’s three worst scores to ensure the tee shot scramble rule, then used their next three best scores. They got 10 points and gained on first place, so it worked out all right.
Edit notes: the press release for June 10 was incorrect. The scoring for the scramble should have read that Team 2 and Team 5 tied. It did not. It does now. The raw scoring and the standings were and still are correct. The correct press release is now available for download.
